NCBRT Indirect Program

NCBRT Trainers are persons who teach NCBRT courses to their own agencies after they have successfully completed a Train-the-Trainer course and are approved by NCBRT. Participants of the Train-the-Trainer class are taught the course material as well as teaching techniques and given in-depth resources for training the adult learner. Upon successful completion of a Train-the-Trainer class, participants receive Continuing Education Units (CEU). Train-the-Trainer participants are eligible to apply for trainer status in the NCBRT Indirect Program. Trainers are not paid by NCBRT to teach a class; however, NCBRT provides all the training materials necessary to conduct the training.

NCBRT Trainers may request training materials for their jurisdiction at no cost. This program enables the NCBRT to reach out to more emergency responders by working directly with local agencies to train their personnel. Benefits to the agency include:
  • Offering training that can be easily integrated in your academy’s training schedule
  • Managing your agency’s training schedule in-house
  • Providing DHS-certified training that meets mandated training standards
  • Flexibility to determine the class size and/or number of personnel trained
  • Access to the NCBRT’s network of subject matter experts for assistance with information covered in the training
  • The NCBRT provides manuals, reference materials, administrative forms, and CEU certification
  • The NCBRT provides revised versions of training materials as updates occur
Together, the Train-the-Trainer and the Indirect Training Programs create an inclusive Training Model for your agency to integrate DHS-certified training into your agency’s schedule. The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Houston Police Department, Training Academy, and Montgomery County Police Department, Training Division have all successfully trained their trainers to provide the Law Enforcement Prevention and Deterrence of Terrorist Acts, Awareness Level course. These agencies offer this course as mandatory training for recruits and/or officers. In one year, Houston trained over 2,799 personnel. Houston is also incorporating the Operational Weapons of Mass Destruction Response for Law Enforcement, Performance level course for their officers once they are in the field. Using this Training Model, these agencies can ensure that all officers meet the basic training standards that are requested by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
